The incomparable and unparalleled Guru Damodara, the Primal Being, is praised here by the foremost of Vedic scholars. He bestows his grace on His devotees and they experience supreme bliss. The Pranava (OM) is the most beautiful of all creations; it has no beginning nor end; it pervades all beings; it is the very breath and life of all beings. The Supreme Lord (Ishvara) is praised as omnipresent and omniscient. Damodarastakam was composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya who spread Hinduism to regions outside India. This is an excellent composition with a good dose of devotion. It contains the names of the twenty-four Tirthankaras and ten thousand Vigraha Lords. There are many Nayanmars who have lived in great compassion and have become immortal by worshipping Him. The creator, protector, destroyer and sustainer of all, He is known as the soul-breathing one by His twenty-four eyes which see everything everywhere at all times. The Lord is therefore called "The One who has a thousand Mansions", "The One who cannot be seen but whose feet can be felt", while some call Him "The Self-conceived" or "Supreme self". He is the first among all and the last of all and is the cause and source of all. The first and second verses of this work contain some valuable mantras. This stotram was composed by Adi Shankara. It describes his form as having fair complexion, long hair, two hands in final mudra, four arms with hands embracing Vaishnava siddhis, blue eyes filled with love for God, knowledge of Vedas in three stages nishkama kriya, vishkama kriya and pramana kriya. The yoga mantra is an integral part of Damodarastakam. According to Adi Shankara, the first verse purifies the mind, the second verse raises the mind to spiritual status. The third verse is for realization of God's existence. The fourth verse is for realization of absolute identity. The fifth verse is for removal of all obstacles. The aim of Damodarastakam is to achieve divinity. Here the supreme values are resolved in Goodness (Dharma) and Truth (Satya). The first three verses are for virtues like purity, kindness and compassion, while verses 4-8 describe how to practice them in life itself. First three verses extol God as creator , protector and destroyer of all .
Damodarastakam is a very beautiful poem in praise of the Supreme Being. It is the masterpiece of Sri Adi Shankara and contains hymns in praise of all the twenty four Tirthankaras and ten thousand Vigraha-Gods. The author of this stotram, Adi Shankaracharya, was a great Yogi and a divine saint who helped millions to become liberated from Karmic bondage. He did not only preach about religion; he lived his life by it and preached religion. He did not regard any human being as superior to any other human being; he believed that all humans had equal status and there was no distinction of caste or class or colour.
